Introducing our collaboration with Melbourne artist Hannah Maskell. Meeting in the artist's Melbourne studio, Maskell's intuitive approach to colour first drew us to her drawing practice.

The Merino Lambswool Jumper and Blanket echo Maskell's drawn grid structures, translated into vibrant knitted textiles.

  • TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF.

My name is Hannah Maskell, I was born in Melbourne's West where I live and work. My art practice is largely drawing based, it is abstract and focuses on colour, line and pattern. I move between flat paper and 3D sculpture in painted wooden grid.

  • WHAT'S IT LIKE TRANSLATING YOUR DRAWINGS INTO KNITWEAR?

The transition from my drawings to textiles is an obvious step. I reference weaving and textile design in the flat surface of paper, so it's a natural progression to realise my work in garment and textile form. I'm hoping the hand drawn pencil will retain its softness and colour in the knit, I'm looking forward to seeing how the straight line is manipulated on the body.

  • WHAT'S YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE?

I work intuitively, feeling out a piece as I make it. I have no strong preconceived idea - just starting with one colour. I get lost in the pencil box and rely on that as a guide. I return to familiar compositions which act as a starting point. I'm inspired by colour - random and curated compositions found in the world. Signs, interiors, flowers, cinema, textile, beach houses: I'm inspired anywhere, any place.

  • HOW DO YOU WEAR WOOL?

I feel the cold so I wear wool constantly - fine fabric close to the skin, and comfy chunky jumpers. I have some incredible knitters in my family and their jumpers are precious treasures I still wear. Wool is comforting and nostalgic.
