We champion natural fibres and are inspired by creatives who transform raw materials through exceptional skill and practice. Ceramicist Kristin Burgham is such an artist, whose reverence for clay and colour inspire our team.
Visiting Kristin's South Melbourne studio we spoke about her practice and how she got started. Kristen wears the Open Stitch Polo in Marine - a vibrant shade in our Summer '25 colour palette which coincidentally mirrors her cast art work.

Tell us about yourself.
I am a ceramicist based in South Melbourne. In 2016, I left a corporate career to study Fine Arts in Melbourne - this gave me the time and space to explore my ideas and discover ceramics. It was life changing.
-
Describe your process.
I am interested in the narrative of objects and making with industrial ceramic processes. I begin by taking a mould of found objects, which I use to produce a limited series of porcelain objects. My objects have an extended seam in reference to the cast object's anonymous maker and the original production decisions. While cast objects are easily mass produced, the objects I make are often one-offs and are imbued with colour.
-
What inspires you?
The process of making inspires me. I like to understand how things are made. I'm also inspired by looking at the things people discard - the emotional engagement or disengagement and the stories to be found in those hard rubbish piles.
-
Does living in Melbourne influence your work?
I love the defined seasons and the way the light changes throughout the year. It inspires my colour palette and makes me think about how colour can generate emotional connection to objects.
"I need to wear good quality clothes that withstand the wear and tear of my studio practice"
-
Describe your style.
My style has changed over the years. When I started my practice, I simplified everything: I wear quality cotton, silk, and wool all year round. I need robust clothing that is very good quality, and preferably in deep blues and greens.

What's something you're looking forward to?
Summer trees with lots of lush green leaves.
